Assalamu 'Alaikum wr wb

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am sorry for being absent long. I have been overwhelmed by writing three
papers this month and finally finished the work yesterday.
Though Japan lost the foodball game last night, I personally cheered
Paraguay as I visited there three times (actually only a very small number
of tourists visits there).

First of all, I have already translated the feedbacks from the students after visiting your Mosque are as follows:

* Dr. Obari spoke Japanese much better Japanese than expected.
*Though I made only a brief question, it was good to hear more detailed answers with
additional information.
* I realized family life made people happy both in Islamic countries and Japan when Dr. Obari delightedly talked about his wife and child.

* I first thought something 'exotic' was in the mosque, but it was simple
and tiny. Rather I had the impression that the mosque was quite similar to
Japanese house in which people put off the shoes and sit on the floor. Such
practices as praying and ramadan seemed difficult for me to habitualize, so
it was great people gathering the mosque kept the practice.

* Before entering the mosque, I felt a little feared to visit unfamiliar
place. But many people's smile changed the impression. Detailed explanation
got rid of the image I scared about Islam.

* I thought Muslims had more fundamentalist attitudes, but actually they
were much calm and gentle. When the evening prayer ends, Dr. Obari walked to
us and shaked hands. I was also impressed by the statement that the first and
foremost principle of Islam is the believe in god, which sounded very simple
and understandable.

* At first I had the impression that Islam is something fearful, but on the
other hand I thought there should be of universal value in Islam as it has
spread around the world.

* Fasting for the poor donation... I first understood the meaning of such
practices and sympathized to it.

* I was nervous during the interview as it was the first time to talk with
foreigners. But explanations with projector was good and easy to understand.

* As I thought of terrorism when Islam is talked about, I was surprised to
be welcomed. Simple impression was honesty, following God.

* (a female student) My impression to mosque was a plenty of males, which
was a little scary for me. But boys in the mosque calmed me down.

* I felt the gap between calm and gentle men in the mosque and terrorists in
the media. When Dr. Obari expressed his good impression in the live in
Japan, I thought he was trying not to talk bad things to Japan as he said
good Muslims did not do such things.

* Seeing is believing. It was nice to listen to live talks on thinking and
feelings.

* The appearance of the building was different from that I expected. I wish
you soon finish all the decroating works. Though the religion and the degree
of securalization is different, I was convinced with Dr. Obari's remark that
Japanese too believe in God.

* I experienced a culture shock to see no idle inside the mosque. I thought
there should be idols or pictures there.

Dear Dr. Ashraf
I really appreciate your suggestion of having an orientation lecture before studying our research study. After hearing the impressions of the students, I felt it necessary to learn more
before fieldwork and thereby concentrated ourselves to read articles on
Islam and Muslim migrants in general.
But it would be grateful if we can have interviews with other members.
As the first quarter continues until 23rd July, I appreciate if you give us
the chance for visiting again.

Best Regards,

Naoto
